What liability insurance does the FMCSA require?
For-hire interstate carriers hauling general freight must carry at least $750,000 in public liability. Carriers hauling oil need $1 million, and hazardous materials run $1 million to $5 million depending on classification. Federal cargo minimums apply only to household goods carriers.
Source: 49 CFR Part 387, current as of 2026. Intrastate-only Texas carriers are governed separately, see Texas requirements.
